성균관 유생들의 나날 1

최근에 읽은 책입니다. 스쳐 지나가는 제목들 속에 처음엔 제 관심을 끌지 못했던 책 성균관이란 단어를 들으면 뭔가 고리타분할 것만 같고 지루할 것 같지만 막상 읽어보니 이 책은 그러하지가 않았습니다. 시대적 배경과 장소는 조선시대의 그것을 가지고 왔지만 그 안의 내용은 그런 것과는 다른 남장을 하게 된 여자와 그를 둘러싼 3명의 남자 사이의 이야기입니다. 뭐 남장여자를 다룬 소설이나 드라마, 만화 같은 것들은 자주 있습니다. 드라마 커피프린스 1호가 그러하고 오란고교 호스트부 같은 만화도 바로 그러한 종류이지요. 이런 드라마를 보면 누구보다도 아름다운 여성이 어쩔 수 없는 이유로 남장을 선택하게 되고 또 주변인들이 이런 남장여자에게 자신이 끌려하는 모습을 자주 그리게 됩니다. 이 소설도 그런 범주에서는 벗어나지 못합니다. 몸이 아파 누워 있는 동생을 대신해 남장을 할 수 밖에 없었던 대물 김윤희 좋은 집안에 어디 하나 빠질 것 없는 바른 생활 사나이인 가람 이선준 조선 시대의 나쁜 남자 걸오 문재신 여색 밝히기를 좋아하는 여림 구용하 이들 사이의 벌어지는 그런 스토리의 소설입니다.

사실 이 소설을 읽을 때 처음 들었던 생각은 일본 만화 '아름다운 그대에게'가 떠 올랐습니다. 그냥 여장남자에게 벌어지는 그런 일반적인 스토리 진행이 아니라 일본 드라마 '아름다운 그대에게', 대만 드라마 '화양소년소녀' 의 원작인 만화 '아름다운 그대에게'와 이 소설 '성균관 유생들의 나날'이 상당히 비슷하다는 느낌이 강하게 들었습니다. 1권을 다 읽을 때 까지도, 아니 2권 중반까지도 이런 느낌은 사실 계속 유지가 되더군요. 비록 2권 중반 이후의 스토리는 그런 느낌이 사라지지만 전체적으로 볼때 1명의 남장여자와 3명의 남자, 그리고 갈등이나 대립 구도 여기에 왕의 존재마져도 아름다운 그대에게의 양호선생님과 비슷한 느낌까지.. 그래도 충분히 재미있었습니다. 제가 책을 처음 잡고 마지막까지 한번에 읽게 만들 정도로 말이죠. 이미 익숙한 스토리지만 그것을 글로서 풀어내는 것이 참 재미나게 그려냈습니다. 조선이라는 시대적 상황과 성균관이라는 장소에 전혀 어색하지 않게 말이죠. 다음주부터 이 소설을 원작으로 한 성균관 스캔들이란 드라마가 방송이 된다고 합니다. 원래 드라마는 거의 안 보는데 이 드라마는 왠지 보고 싶다는 생각이 강하게 듭니다. 얼마나 원작에 충실히 그려냈을지, 과연 각 캐릭터들이 어떤 모습을 그려낼지 말이죠

이미 여름이 다 끝나가지만 더운 여름날 휴일에 하루 쯤은 이 책을 들고 누워서 시간을 보내시는 것도 나쁘지는 않을 것입니다.
그냥 시간 보내기에는 어려운 책 보다는 이런 킬링타임용 소설들이 더 낳을테니 말이죠
단... 학생들에게 읽히지는 마세요. 이 책 은근 야합니다.
방자전에서 나온 은꼴편과 같이 소설이라는 것이 글로서 우리의 상상력을 자극하기에 오히려 사진이나 동영상 보다 더 야하게 느낄 수도 있으니깐요

이번에도 위드블로그에서 받은 '수학의 신 엄마가 만든다' 리뷰입니다

일단 이 책을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 저자가 누구인지부터 알아야 하겠지요


그리고 본격적인 리뷰를 하기 전에 저에 대해 간단히 말하자면 저는 공신이니 엄친아니 이런 거랑은 거리가 멀었습니다
그 이유는 좋아하는 과목은 잘 했지만 좋아하지 않는 성적이 영~~ 아니였기 때문입니다
제가 학창 시절 가장 좋아하는 과목은 수학이였습니다
뭐 저자의 아들처럼 경시대회를 나간다던지 올림피아드를 나갈 정도의 실력은 되지 못하였습니다
그냥 수능에서 수리1 영역에서 만점은 아니고 99.X % 받을 정도였습니다
그리고 학창 시절 사교육은 지금은 거의 사라졌지만 제가 어릴때만 해도 많은 아이들이 배웠던 주산 조금 배우고 학원이랑은 거리가 멀게 살다가 중학교 입학하기 전에 두달 학원 다니고 또 고등학교 들어가기 전 두달 정도, 그리고 고등학교 때는 일년에 한두달 정도씩 단과학원에 다니는 정도였습니다

그럼 본격적으로 이 책의 리뷰를 시작하겠습니다

일단 이 책의 서문을 읽는 도중 제 눈에 하나 거슬리는게 눈에 띄었습니다

나는 정보력도 욕심도 없는 '지방 엄마' 였으므로, 아이를 끌어주는 것 역시 평범했다. 초등학교 때는 나와 용균이 둘이서 공부를 했다

분명 이 책의 저자는 수학 정교사 자격증을 가지고 20년 이상 사교육 현장에 있던 사람입니다
이런 사람이 정보력도 없는 평범한 엄마라니 조금은 이해하기 힘든 부분이였습니다
최신의 정보를 가장 우선적으로 접하는게 사교육에 있는 분들인데 그럼 보통의 평범한 어머니들은 눈뜬 봉사라는 건가요? --+

이 책의 목차를 간략히 살펴보면


이 책을 쭉 읽다보면 초등학교 입학하기 전 아이들을 가진 학부모들 혹은 초등학교 저학년 학부모들에게 도움이 될만한 내용은 많이 있습니다
각 연령대에 맞추어서 뭘 어떻게 해야할지 모르는 학부모들에게 일종의 가이드를 제공하는 것이지요

하지만 무조건 맹신하기에도 좀 무리가 있습니다
뭐 이 책의 좋은 점들은 다른 분들이 많이 써 주셨으니 저는 그냥 읽다가 이건 아닌것 같은데 하는 부분들만 좀 언급하겠습니다

일단 학습지.... ㅡ.ㅡ;;
저도 중학교때 학습지 해 보았습니다
학원을 안 다니니 어머니께서 학습지는 신청해 주시더라고요
하지만 두달 하고 그만 두었습니다
수학을 상당히 좋아하는 저였지만 학습지는 오히려 공부를 하고 싶다는 의욕을 떨어뜨리더군요
그런데 학교도 들어가기 전인 아이들에게까지 학습지라니요..
물론 제대로 부모님들이 활용을 한다면 좋은 효과를 줄테지만 저자는

물론 전혀 고민하지 않고 학습지만 달랑 주어도 어느 정도는 효과를 볼 수 있다

라고 말하는 군요
근에 이 효과에는 역효과도 있다는 것을 이 책을 읽는 부모님들은 기억하셔야 할 것입니다
매일 조금씩 공부하는 습관을 들이는 것은 참 좋은 일이지만 그로 인해 오히려 흥미를 떨군다면 아니한만 못한 일이기 때문입니다

또 저자는 책 중간에 기계적으로 문제 푸는 것에 대해 이야기를 합니다
근데 학습지를 풀다보면 사고적으로 문제를 푸는 것이 아니라 이런 기계적인 문제 푸는 방법에 더 익숙해진다는 것이지요

그리고 그 담이 선행학습...
책에서 저자는 말하고 있습니다

예습은 보통 선행학습과 같은 뜻으로 쓰이지만, 엄밀히 말하면 다른 말이다. 예를 들어 방학 동안 앞 학기 내용을 꽁부해두는 것은 예습이지만, 몇 단원부터 1~2년 과정의 진도를 꾸준히 앞서 나가는 것은 선행학습니다.

이 기준에 따르면 저는 선행학습을 한번도 해 본적이 없었습니다
제가 수학을 공부하던 방법은 방학이 시작하면 서점에 가서 제 스스로 문제짐을 살펴보고 한 권을 사 왔습니다
그리고 다른건 아무것도 하지 않고 혼자서 앉아서 그 책을 처음부터 끝까지 다 읽고 이해하려고 노력하고 문제를 풀었습니다
어떠한 정의가 나오면 그 정의를 이해하는 것을 가장 우선시 하였고 증명하는 것이 나오면 그걸 이해하고 제 스스로 다시 한번 증명을 해보았으며 모르는 문제가 있더라도 뒤에 답이나 해설을 보지 않고 혼자서 끝까지 풀어댔습니다
어떨때는 한 문제를 풀기위해 2~3시간을 소비하기도 했었습니다
하지만 저자가 말하는 예습의 범위인 다음 학기 정도의 공부만 했지 그 이상의 진도로 나가지는 않았습니다
학기가 시작하면 그 학기의 내용을 다시 공부하는 것에 중점을 두었지 굳이 또 한 학기 앞서 진도를 나가는 행동은 하지 않았습니다

하지만 이 책의 저자는 이렇게 권합니다

공부를 잘하는 아이는 각 학년의 난이도가 높은 문제집 두 권, 경시대회 문제집 한 권, 다음 학년의 중간 난이도 문제집 한 권을 사서 선행학습을 하도록 한다

물론 수학을 잘하면 좋겠습니다만 아이들이 수학 이외에 다른 과목들도 공부해야 할 것들이 많을 뿐더러 오히려 선행학습을 많이 한 학생들을 보면 자기 학년의 문제들은 틀리는 모습을 더 많이 보여줍니다
완전히 자기 것으로 받아들이지 않은채 그냥 안다는 수준에서 다음으로 넘어가는 경우가 더 많기 때문입니다
이런 학생들을 보면 문제는 푸는데 왜 그렇게 되는지 그 원리를 모르는 경우가 더 맣이 있고요
그러하기에 저는 오히려 방학때만 다음 학기의 내용을 공부하고 학기 중에는 그 학기의 내용을 충실히 소화시키는게 더 낳다고 생각을 합니다

이 책은 분명히 수학을 어떻게 해야할까 고민하는 어머니들에게 가이드는 될 수 있을 것입니다
하지만 맹신하지 마시기 바랍니다
가이드는 언제까지 가이드입니다
그 길이 자신의 자녀에게 맞고 그 길이 옳은지 아닌지는 스스로 판단하셔서 적용시킬 부분은 적용시켜야 할 테고 아니다 싶은 부분이 나오면 그냥 이런 것도 있구나라는 정도에서 읽으시기 바랍니다
과유불급이란 말도 있듯이 그 한계선을 잘 긋는 것이 가장 현명한 부모님이겠지요

위드블로그에서 받은 작은 기적들 1, 2권에 대한 리뷰입니다

솔직히 책 읽는 내내 당했다라는 느낌을 지울수는 없었습니다
물론 돈 주고 산 책이 아닌 리뷰 목적으로 받은 책이였음에도 불구하고 이런 느낌이 들었습니다

제가 이 책의 리뷰를 신청한 것은 가족의 소중함을 일꺠워주는 특별한 이야기라기에 신청한 것이였는데 이건 뭐 '신기한 TV 써프라이즈'에서 '진실 혹은 거짓'을 보는 듯한 느낌???
대체 어디서 가족의 소중함을 느끼라는 것인지 모르겠더군요

그래서 한번 원제목은 어떻게 되어 있을까 보았습니다


원서의 표지입니다
잘 보시면 아시겠지만 결국 "Extraordinary Coincidences That Reaffirm Our Deepest Ties" 이게 "가족의 소중함을 일깨워주는 특별한 이야기" 이렇게 바뀐 것이고요 "Extraordinary Coincidences of Heart & Sprit" 이 '여성의 영혼을 따듯하게 해주는 놀라운 이야기"로 바뀐것이네요

일단 원 제목과 부제를 알고 다시 보니 이젠 이 책이 무엇을 말하고 싶었는지 알게 되더군요

아마 많은 분들이 느끼실것입니다. 세상 참 좁다고..
생각지도 못했던 장소에서 누군가를 만나게 된다거나 하는 그런 경험들 누구나 다 가지고 계실 것입니다
오래전에 헤어졌던 친구를 다시는 못 볼거라 생각했던 그런 친구를 아주 우연히 전혀 예상치도 못했던 장소에서 만났다거나 뭐 그런 일들 말입니다

작은 기적들1 은 그런 이야기들을 가족이라는 범주 안에서 추스린 것들입니다
하지만 가족이라는 범주 안에서만 묶다보니 어떤 이야기는 밑도 끝도 없는 이야기들도 있습니다.
읽으면서 대체 이건 뭐하자는 거지? 이런 느낌도 들고요

그에 비해 작은 기적들 2는 그 범주를 여성이라는 것으로 확장 시켰습니다
그러니 추스릴만한 내용도 더 많았고요. 세상의 반은 여성이니깐요.
그리고 우리나라에 나온 책 순서와틑 달리 작은 기적들2가 2000년도에 그리고 작은기적들1이 2003년도 출판입니다
형보다 나은 아우 없다고 확실히 책도 2권이 더 나아보입니다
만약 누군가에게 책을 추천해야 한다면 1권은 패스시키겠지만 2권은 한번 읽어볼만하다 말해주고 싶네요

마지막으로 이 책을 읽으면서 가장 눈에 들어온 글귀입니다

"기적은 우리가 두려움을 버리고 믿음을 향해 나아갈 때 찾아온다."

어찌보면 뻔하지만.... 그걸 실천하지 못하기에 이 말이 늘 새롭게 다가오는 것이겠지요

렛츠리뷰에서 두번째로 받은 시사IN
원래 진작에 읽고 리뷰를 썼어야 했으니 어찌어찌 미루다 보니 57호가 나올 시점이 되어서야 리뷰를 씁니다.

55호의 표지를 보면 '한국경제 위기징후'가 커버스토리로 나오고
그 외에 '강남 좌파, 세상 밖으로 걸어나오다'와
'홍준표 한나라당 원래대표 인터뷰 "정권 입맛대로 교과서 바꾸면 안 돼"'가 나온다

또 표지그림을 보면 2MB 대통령이 '감세 규제완화'란 보따리를 들고 있는 것으로 보아 이 또한 중요 이슈로 다루었다는 것을 알 수가 있다

지난번 리뷰떄도 썼지만 시사IN 맨 앞장에 독자글이나 신조어, 세계검색어 등이 왜 맨 앞에 위치해야 하는지는 여전히 모르겠다
이런 내용은 보통 잡지 맨 뒤쪽에 위치하는게 바람직해 보이는데 왜 시사잡지로서 무게가 가볍게 보이게 이런 걸 맨 앞에 놓았을까하는 생각이 든다

그 뒤로 이어지는 포토in...
단 한장의 사진과 짧은 그링지만 그 동안 잊고 있던 이랜드,  KTX 여승무원, 기륭전자 문제를 다시 한 번 생각하게 만드는 좋은 사진과 글이 아닌가 싶다

그 다음에 계속해서 이어지는 커버스토리 "한국 경제 덮치는 위기의 그림자"
현 문제에 대해서 상당히 쉽게 글을 써 나갔으며 현 상황에 대한 대책도 적당히 잘 제시되어 있는 상당히 좋은 구성이다

다만 공병호 소장과 홍종학 교수를 내세운 경제학과 좌우 논객 대담을 읽어보면 타이틀과 내용이 무언가 맞지 않는다는 느낌이 많이 든다
글을 읽닫보면 공소장은 자유주의의 기본을 더 강화한자 말하고 홍교수는 규제 완화 이전에 시장의 규칙을 세워야 한다는 한다는 대립적 입장이 나타나기는 하지만 글 전체적인 맥락으로 봐서는 둘이 같은 내용을 말하는 것 같은데 무슨 좌우논객이라 말할 수 있는지 모르겠다

이어서 정치.

내용 괜찮았고 또 민주당에 대한 아쉬움도 잘 드러나 있다
현 정국을 보면 정말 한나라당 내에서 의견이 다를 뿐이지 민주당 이하 다른 당들의 모습은 보이지 않는데 그런 현상에 대해 잘 적은 것 같다

이어지는 "지방 외면하겠다는 이명박 정부의 '철학' 드러났다"라는 기사....
아쉬운 면만 드러나는 기사라 생각이 든다
특히 마지막에 "이명박 대통령이 폐지에 급급해하는 것은 왜곡된 정보 탓인 것 같다고 해석했다"는 부분...
그럼 민주당에서 제대로된 정보블 제공해서 설득을 하던가... --+

오히려 이어지는 홍준표 한나라당 원내대표의 인터뷰가 조금 더 현실적으로 다가왔다
늘 말하지만 보수는 어찌되었건 간에 뭔가 대책은 제시를 하므로...
다만 여기도 기사 제목과 글 내용과는 거리가 있어보인다
인터뷰 내용 중 시사IN의 입맛에 맛는 부분을 크게 확대시킨 제목..
종부세나 뉴타운 등이 더 많은 부분을 차지하는데 조금 나온 교과서 개편 내용을 타이틀로 잡은 의도는 무엇인지 궁금해지기는 하는 제목
특히 "뉴타운 주변 지역의 전세금이 올라가는 현상은 그럴 수 밖에 없다고 본다"라는 부분을 보면 현 정권과 한나라당의 시각이 그대로 나타나는데...

"부자가 되려면 부자의 줄에 서라"

이 말은 무슨 의미일까요?
부자가 되고 싶다면.. 성공하고 싶다면 그들과 같은 생각을 공유하라는 것입니다
그들과 같은 생각을 공유하기 위해서는 조금은 불편하지만 그들이 주장하는 의견에 귀를 기울이고 그 의견에 함께 동참해야 합니다
그런 면에서 본다면 소위 요즘 말하는 조중동의 의견의 귀를 바짝 기울이고 그들과 함께 해야겠지요

하지만 그들의 의견을 쫓는다고 하더라고 너무나 일방적으로 그들의 의견만은 쫓는다면 사고의 폭이 너무 좁아질 수 밖에 없습니다
똑바로 세상을 살아가는 데에는 다른 사람들의 여러 의견을 듣고 이해를 해야만 합니다
즉 소위 보수측의 의견이 아니라 그 반대편에 서 있는 의견에도 귀를 기울이고 관심을 가져야 하는 것입니다
물론 판단은 스스로가 해야겠지요. 다른 사람이 말하는 것을 그대로 따르는 것이 아니라...

그런 의미에서 시사IN은 존재의 의미를 지니고 있습니다

저는 시사IN을 이번에 처음 접했습니다
예전에는 한겨례 신문도 봤었고 월간 말도 읽은 적이 있지만 최근들어 시사 이쪽에는 큰 관심을 기울이지 않고 있었습니다
하지만 이번에 렛츠리뷰에서 당첨된 시사IN
잠시 검색해 보니 한때 말 많았던 시사저널에서 퇴사하신 분들이 모여서 만든 시사주간지더군요
배경을 알고 보니 일단 듣보잡 주간지는 아니구나라는 신뢰가 생겼습니다

제가 이번에 받은 시사IN 46호 표지입니다

일단.... 유리창의 반대쪽에서 본 철거라는 붉은 글씨가 눈에 들어옵니다
그리고 옆에는 "서울 뉴타운 개발에 밀려나는 원주민 실태 돈 없으면 OUT"이란 글씨가 눈에 띄입니다
이 기사가 이번 호의 메인이라는 것을 알 수가 있습니다

그리고 하단에는 "전경련, 회원사에 동원령 "건국 60년 행사에 청소년 3000명 모아라""라고 씌여져 있습니다
뉴타운 다음으로 중요한 기사라는 것을 알수가 있습니다

이제는 안으로 들어가 보겠습니다
처음 차례를 보면 커버스토리인 뉴타원이 32쪽에 나와있음을 알 수 있습니다...
근데 이번호를 읽다보니 32쪽이 상당히 뒤에 배치되어 있구나라고 느껴졌습니다
앞쪽에 배치된 내용중에 일부분은 뒤쪽에 배치되어야 할 것만 같은 기사도 눈에 띄었습니다
특히 배트맨보다 조커가 더 인기라는 기사는 앞쪽에 왜 있는지 이해가 가지 않았습니다
또 독자와의 수다도 왜 이게 여기있지라는 생각부터 들었습니다
가쉽거리가 가득한 잡지라면 모르게지만 그래도 시사주간지인데 이런 가쉽거리에 가까운 기사는 뒤쪽에 있는게 더 낳지 않을까라는 생각이 듭니다

또 이번호의 특집은 폭력사회에 대해 다루었습니다

나머지 글들의 순서를 보면 언론 / 정치 / 경제 / 커버스토리 / 정보통신 / 국제 / 특집 폭력 사회 / 사회 / 한반도 / 여행 / 문화의 순으로 글이 나열되어 있습니다

이제는 기사의 내용으로 들어가 보겠습니다
10쪽에 "옥중 서신 시대에서 전자 옥중서신 시대로"라는 글이 있습니다
그런데... 기사 내용중에 나우콤 문용식 대표에 대한 글이 있었습니다
그는 분명 저작권 위반이으로 구속이 되었는데 이번 문대표의 구속이 꼭 민주화운동인듯한 느낌이 나도록 연결을 시켜 놓았더군요
이번 촛불집회에서 아프리카의 활약이 구속에 영향을 주었다고 생각할 수도 있으나 우리나라에서 불법자료가 가장 많이 유통되는 클럽박스나 피디박스 또한 나우콤에서 운영되고 있다는 사실은 그냥 넘어가고 있습니다

예로 든 클럽박스에서 용량순으로 정렬한 것입니다
상위에 있는 소위 금박스라고 하는 저 곳에 과연 불법이 아닌 자료가 어느정도일까요?
컴퓨터 그래픽, 애니, 영화, 게임, 성인자료, 게임, 동영상 등등 아마 거의 모든 자료들이 불법자료들일것입니다

 문 대표는 “내가 밖에 있었으면 나우콤 주식을 많이 매입했을 것이다. 내 구속에도 불구하고 사업 실적이 괜찮고 영화계와 합의가 이루어져 합법 영화 콘텐츠 유통사업을 시작하면 당할 회사가 없을 것이다”라고 장담했다. 그의 장담대로 나우콤은 지난 7월18일 3000원까지 떨어진 이후 7월21일부터 4일 연속 상승했다.

문대표 말처럼 영화만 합법으로 하면 되는건가요?
저기 보이는 불법소프트웨어, 음악자료, 성인용 자료는 어떻게 할건데요?

그리고.. 이건 나우콤의 시세랑 거래량인데...
고작 4일 오른걸로 대세라고까지 글 쓰는건 너무 이른거 아닐까요?

뭐 진보쪽 시각에서 글을 쓰는 것도 좋지만 이런 명백한 이유에 대해서는 한번쯤 지적을 하고 넘어가는게 조금 더 보기 좋지 않을까라는 생각도 듭니다

다음으로는 24쪽에 있는 "기업 팔 비틀어 건국 60년 행사 치르겠다니..."라는 기사입니다
이것은 표지에 있던 기사입니다

기사 내용은 조금 아쉬운듯 느낌이 나긴하지만 뭐 괜찮았습니다

그 다은 기사로 26쪽의 "저소득층 살리려는 위기 해법이 없다" 입니다

이 기사를 읽어보니 진보언론사의 최대 약점을 그대로 드러내고 있었습니다
즉.. 현실에 대해 지적은 합니다만 그에 따른 대안은 제시하지 못하고 있습니다
이 기사의 내용입니다

 금리인상론자인 홍익대 전상인 교수(경제학)는 “물론 금리 인상은 저소득층을 괴롭힌다. 하지만 물가가 더 올라버리면 손쓸 방법이없다. 큰 방향은 교과서대로 가고, 거기서 발생하는 ‘부상자’를 챙기고 치료하는 게 정부가 할 일이다”라고 주장했다. 하지만 전교수도 이명박 정부가 과연 ‘부상자를 치료하는’ 구실을 제대로 해낼 것인지에 대해서는 의심스럽다는 반응이다. 저소득층의 눈높이로정책을 고안하려는 노력이 보이지 않는다는 얘기다.

 이종태 연구위원은 “저소득층을 위한 경제 위기 극복 방법은 사실상 없다. 위기에는 구조조정이 따르고, 그를 견디지 못하는저소득층일수록 타격이 클 수밖에 없다”라고 말했다. 오늘날의 스태그플레이션 상황에서는 금리든 환율이든, ‘본질적으로 저소득층을위한 물가안정책’은 없다는 얘기다.
정부의 역할이 중요해지는 지점도 여기다. 구조조정의 ‘낙오자’를 보듬는 정책이준비가 되지 않은 채 물가부터 잡겠다고 덤비다가는 양극화만 깊어질 가능성이 높다. 그런데 이런 지적을 한 조복현 교수의 말대로“이 정부 태생이 그게 아니라서” 문제다.

그러면 정부에서 어떻게 하라는거죠?
정부의 역할이 중요하다고 했으면 어떻게 했으면 좋겠다라는 조금은 구체적인 대안도 제시했으면 합니다
보수세력측의 언론은 욕을 먹건 어쨌건.. 양극화가 심해지건 말건..
경제를 살리겠다는 큰 틀 안에서 이런저런 대안들을 제시합니다
하지만 그 반대측에서는 비판만을 하지 마땅한 대안을 제시하지 못하는 것은 문제라고 느껴지네요
원론적인 입장에서 통화정책이 어떻고 재정정책이 어떻고 환율정책은 어떻게 해야하네 이런 수준에서의 지껄임이 아니라 조금은 사람들에게 쉽게 다가올 수 있을 만한 대안을 제시해주시기바랍니다

그리고 32쪽의 뉴타운...
일단 이번 호의 가장 핵심 기사이기에 조금 더 꼼꼼히 읽어보았습니다

근데... 왜... 너무나도 뻔한 내용을 이리 길게 써 놓고 커버스토리까지 올렸을까라는 생각이 듭니다
게다가 글 중간에 보면...

 결국 뉴타운 지구 내 보금자리에서 쫓겨나는 강북 서민층은 덩달아 오른 인근 지역 전·월세를 감당하지 못해 서울에서 밀려날 수밖에없다. <시사IN> 인턴 기자들이 지난 1주일 동안 서울 5개 권역 뉴타운 지역을 집중 취재한 결과 강북 서민의‘서울 엑소더스’ 현상은 이미 광범위하게 진행 중이었고, 떠나는 이들의 원성은 하늘을 찌를 듯했다.
길음·미아·상계·장위·휘경 등 서울 동북부 뉴타운 지역 주민은 주로 양주·포천·동두천·의정부 등 경기 동북부 지역으로 밀려나는 것으로 드러났다. 전농·답십리·왕십리 뉴타운 지역에서는 주로 성남과 남양주 등으로 옮겨가고 있었다.

설마.... 인턴기자들이 취재한거 앉아서 짜집기한 기사인가요?
그리고 조금 아쉬운거...
떠나는 이들의 원성이 하늘을 찌를 듯 했다는데.. 그러면 그들은 작년 대선과 올 총선에서 누구를 지지했었는지도 궁금해지는데 그런것도 함께 조사했으면 하는 아쉬움이 남습니다
그들은 그때 이미 이런 현실이 도래할 것을 알았을까? 아니면 그냥 달콤한 발언에 빠져 있었을까? 라는 생각도 해봅니다
다시 한번 사람들에게 알린다는 의미도 물론 중요하지만 커버스토리에 올릴만한 기사라면 다들 이미 상식선에서 알고 있는 기사가 아니라 조금 더 자세히 취재하고 올렸으면 하네요

나머지 기사들도 보면 꽤 좋은 시각에서 글을 쓴 좋은 글들도 많이 눈에 띄입니다만 아쉬운 점들 또한 눈에 띄는 것들도 사실입니다
예로 27쪽에 보면 강만수 장관의 글을 이용해 놓았는데 여기에 "유동성 과잉"이라는 글이 보입니다
시사주간지이기에 어느 정도 관심이 있는 사람들이 읽는 다는 것을 전제로 한다지만 관심 없던 사람이 읽으면 유동성이 뭐야?라고 생각하지 않을까요?
그런 사람들을 위해 한 줄 정도 간단히 설명해도 되지 않을까 싶습니다
또 28쪽의 GMO나 58쪽의 ARF  같은 단어들도 유전자 변형 농산물(GMO), 아세안 안보포럼(ARF) 이렇게만 표시하지 말고 처음 한번 정도는 유전자 변형 농산물(Genetically Modified Organism : GMO) 나 아세안 안보포럼 (Asian Regional Forum : ARF) 식으로 한번쯤 표시해주는게 더 낳지 않을까 싶습니다
글에서 유전자 변형 농산물이나 아세안 안보포럼처럼 우리나라 말로 쭉 글 쓰는것도 아니고 GMO, ARF처럼 영어 축약 단어를 쓰는 것이라면 축약되기 전의 원래 단어도 한번 적어줘야하지 않을까요?

물론 오늘 영풍문고 가니 여전히 베스트셀러라 광고하면서 팔고 있더군요

저는 이 책에 대해서 딱 잘라서 이렇게 말하고 싶습니다

만약... 당신이 기독교 인이라면은 절대 읽지 말라고....

기독교 인이 아니라면... 또는 신의 존재를 믿지 않는 사람이라면 뭐 읽을만할지도 모르겠습니다
하지만 이게 베스트셀러에 올라갈만한 책인가에 대해서는 글쎄요라고 말하고 싶습니다

솔직히 이런 내용의 책들은 많이 있습니다만 이 책은 마케팅의 승리라고 할까요..

책의 핵심 내용은 간단합니다
영어로는 attraction 한글로는 끌어당김, 흡인, 유인 이것에 핵심인 것처럼 보입니다만
실제로의 핵심은 이것이 아닙니다. 이 책이 말하는 것을 꼭 찝어서 말한다면

 나는 신이다. 고로 나는 무엇이든 할 수 있다

내가 신인데 무엇이든 할 수 있으니 긍정적인 생각만을 하고 그것을 이루라는 것이 이 책의 핵심입니다

책 164쪽에 보면 이렇게 나와 있습니다

그리고 세일 품목이였던지라 6권 사는데 35000원 정도밖에 안 들었습니다. *^^*
예전 같았으면 2~3일치 담배값도 안 되는 가격으로 마음의 양식인 책 한권을 장만하네요

근데.. 지금 읽고 있는 Freakonomics랑 읽다가 만 Thd Audacity of Hope을 얼른 읽어야할텐데 말입니다. --+

뭐 많은 분들이 아실겁니다
누가 내 치즈를 옮겼을까? 물론 저도 집에 번역된 책 있습니다.
8년전에 선물 받고 읽어본 책
오래간만에 새로 읽어보니 기억이 되살아나기도 하고...
근데 영어로 된걸 읽고 난 후에 번역된걸 훑어보니 조금 아쉬운게 보이네요
일단 생쥐의 이름과 꼬마 인간의 이름이 느낌이 영 안 사네요

영어로 Sniff를 번역서에는 그냥 스니프(킁킁거리며 냄새를 맡는다는 의미의 의성어)로 Scurry는 스커리(종종거리며 급히 달린다는 의미의 의태어), Hem은 헴(헛기침한다는 의미의 의성어)로 Haw은 허(점잔을 뺀다는 의미의 단어)로 이렇게만 해 놓았는데 저 단어가 설명하고자 하는 의미는 다 설명하지 못하는 듯 싶습니다

사전에서 보면 Sniff는

sniff〔〕〔의성어〕 vi.
1 코를 킁킁거리다, 냄새를 맡다 《at》
2 코를 훌쩍거리다
3 콧방귀를 뀌다 《at》
━ vt.
1 …의 냄새를 맡다

요렇게 되어 있는데 킁킁거리는 의성어도 있지만 밑에 눈치채다 알아채다라는 뜻이 글을 이해하는데 있어서 더 중요한듯 보이고

헛기침이라는 의성어보다는 주저한다는 의미가 강한데 이런 말은 쏙 빠져있으며

vi. (말이 막히거나 점잔 빼느라고) 「에에」하다, 말이 막히다, 우물거리다
━ n. 「에에」하는 소리
점잔뺀다는 의미도 있겠지만 뒤에 우물거리다라는 의미가 중요한듯 보이는데 이러한 설명이 쏙 빠져있습니다

게다가 hem and haw라는 숙어가 떠듬거리다, 미적거리다, 우물쭈물하다, 얼버무리다라는 아주 중요한 뜻이 있다는 것도 설명해주었으면 하는 생각이 드네요

확실히 어설픈 번역보는 것보다는 원서로 읽는게 훨씬 좋은 것 같습니다
이렇게 쉬운 책 조차도 번역서로 보면 그 뜻이 제대로 다 전달되지 않으니..
저런 간단한 숨은 뜻 같은것은그냥 밑에 주석처리해서 몇줄 더 설명해주면 읽는 사람들이 더 깔끔하게 이해가 될텐데.... 쩝

책을 먼저 고르고 오디오북을 찾는게 힘들다는 것을 알았다.. --+
그래서 먼저 오디오북을 다운 받고 책을 고르기로 했다
그래서 일단 가지고 있는 오디오북 중에서 좀 읽을 만하고 국내에서 그나마 쉽게 구할 수 있는 책들 정리...

오늘 그저께 주문했던 책이 날라왔다.
(역시 교보문고는 주문하면 최소 이틀 이상이 걸린다.. --+)

왼쪽에서부터 Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Who Moved My Cheese, the Secret, The Little Prince, Freakonomics 이다

일단 오늘까지 보던 Odacity of Hope은 지금 1/3 가량 읽었으니 잠시 뒤로 미루었다

당췌 정치는 나랑 안 맞는듯 싶으니..


왼쪽께 The Secret, 오른쪽께 Freakonomics이다
The Secret는 paperbook 이 아닌 양장본이다.. ㅠㅠ
그리고 Freaknomics는 책 사이즈가 조금 작으나 글씨 크기는 많이 작다... --+
그러나 내용은 두권 다 별로 어려워보이지는 않는다

이것은 어린왕자와 누가 내 치즈를 옮겼을까...
이것 둘은 물론 번역된 책이 집에 있다.. --+

나의 가슴을 아프게 한 Roald Dahl 의 책들이다.
오디오북 다 받은 다음에 확인해보니... 이런 젠당..
오디오북이 아니라 오디오쇼이다.. ㅠㅠ
즉 책 고대로 읽어주는게 아니라 책 내용을 바탕으로 라디오 드라마처럼 하는것...
뭐 들어보니 재미있기는 한데 그러면 이 책은 오디오북 없이 들어야만 하는 건가.. ㅠㅠ
새로 받고는 있는데 또 저걸 언제 기다리노

뭐 의도한 것은 아니였는데...

근데 과연 내가 이 책을 볼까???
난 포토샵 안 쓰는데....

뭐 간단한 그림작업 하는데 구지 포토샵과 같은 비싼 상용 프로그램을 쓸 이유를 전혀 못 느끼기에...

거기에 모니터도 칼리브레이션도 잘 안되는 저렴한 그냥 LG꺼 20.1인치 와이드 쓰고...
또 어차피 왭상에서 보여줄 것이라면 대부분의 사람들이 화면 안 맞추고 보는데다가 색 제대로 지원 못하는 익스플로러 쓸건데... --+
내가 DSLR을 가지고 있어서 인화용으로 작업하는 것이라면 모르겠다만....
어차피 필름 카메라를 주로 사용하고 똑딱이 디카는 그냥 블로그 사진용으로만 쓰는데....
필름스캐너도 있다만 그것도 그냥 웹용 스캔으로 쓰는거고... 쩝..

흠.. 양깡님에게 미안하지만 교회 도서관에나 기증할까... --+

일단 그래도 조금 읽을만한 Freakonomics와 올 상반기 최고의 베스트셀러인 The Secret

나머지는 중간중간 Audacity of hope 읽다가 지칠때 읽을 아주 짧막짧막한 동화책들이다.
Carlie and the Chocolate Factory를 쓴 Roald Dahl의 Fantastic Mr. Fox와 Matilda
여기에 아주 유명한 The Little Prince와 Who moved my cheese 까지해서 총 6권 결재해 버렸다... --+
일단 읽던거 다 읽고 질러야하는데 쩝..
그래도 교보에서 주문했기에 내 손에 도착하기까지 조금 걸리니 그때까지 The Audacity of Hope 최대한 많이 읽어야겠다

Roald Dahl의 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory..
뭐 일단 아주 간단한 책이다
내용도 쉽고 길이도 아주 짧은..
가격도 싸다. 인터넷에서 주문하면 달랑 5천원.. *^^*

Eric Idle의 목소리가 나오는 오디오북도 3시간 조금 넘는 재생시간..
2-3일이면 충분히 읽을 수 있는 분량이다

다만...
Oompa-Loompas가 부르는 노래들의 폰트가 처음에 참 껄쩍지근했다
하지만 오디오북으로 저 부분을 들으면 딱딱 맞아 떨어지는 운율이 참 듣기는 좋았다



Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) is a children's book by Welsh author Roald Dahl. This story of the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of eccentric candymaker Willy Wonka is often considered one of the most beloved children's stories of the 20th century.

This story revolves around a boy called Charlie Bucket and the strange happening at Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Charlie Bucket is not stronger, faster or better than other children; his family is not rich, powerful, or well connected. But, he was the luckiest boy in the entire world, he just didn't know it yet. He lives next to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory although he is not able to get as many chocolate bars as he wants.

His grandparents(particularly Grandpa Joe), are fantastic storytellers and tell him about the chocolate factory and how it was closed and all the workers were fired due to spies. Suddenly Willy Wonka sends five "Golden Tickets" into the world that states that one child will receive a special prize at the end of a tour of the factory, and these are found by Augustus Gloop (a gluttonous chocoholic), Veruca Salt (a spoiled self obsessed brat), Violet Beureguarde (a competitive bubble gum champion), Mike Teavee (an obsessive fan of T.V and violence)and Charlie Bucket (the luckiest boy in the entire world). Four great disasters occur-- 1: Augustus Gloop falls in the chocolate river and is sucked to a place that makes strawberry flavoured chocolate coated fudge. 2: Violet Beureguarde doesn't heed Wonka's warning and eats a three-course dinner thats made into a stick of gum and turns blue and swells like blueberry. 3: Veruca Salt tries to take a squirrel and gets thrown down the garbage chute. 4: Mike Teavee is transported into a T.V in the T.V room. Each of these events is accompanied by a song composed by the Oompa Loompas, and at the end Willy Wonka gives Charlie the prize: ownership of the whole factory.


그리고 지금 Barack Obama의 Audacity of Hope을 읽고 있는데 확실히 여타 다른 책보다는 조금 어렵다

게다가 오디오북도 Abridged라서 오디오 들으면서 읽다가 중간에 멈춰서 그냥 책만 읽기를 반복하고 있다.

그래도 오바마 자신의 목소리라니 이거 다 읽고 나면 이제 오바마 목소리에는 적응되어서 뉴스도 그냥 들을 수 있으려나?

또 이 책 읽고나서 다음 책 읽을려고 저번에 작성한 목록들 오디오북 다운 받는데
[Reading Life] - 아.. 새로 사온책 읽지도 않았는데 새로 사고싶은 책들을 늘어나네..

젠당 한권밖에 오디오북을 못 구했다.. --+
우리나라 사람들도 그다지 경제서적은 안 읽는데 재네들도 마찬가지인가보다

뭐 오디오북 없이도 읽는덴 지장 없다마는 버스나 지하철에서 읽기에는 오디오북이 소음차단으로 최곤데..
집중도 잘 되고...
어쩔 수 없이 그냥 구할 수 있는 오디오북 중에서 그냥 책 골라야겠다...

The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford (경제학 콘서트)

약 지난 2주간 열심히 잃은 책이다 별로 두껍지도 않은 책 뭐 이리 오래 걸렸냐고 할수도 있지만 책을 버스나 지하철 등 왔다갔다 할 때만 읽기에 뭐 조금 오래 걸렸다. 예전에는 창 밖을 보면서 음악만 들었는데 갑자기 그 시간이 그리 아까워 졌기에... 이번에 읽은 책은 Tim Harford의 The Undercover Economist.. 우리나라에는 경제학 콘서트라고 해서 많이 알려진 책이다 뭐 나는 읽어보지 않았지만 한간에 떠도는 말에 의하면 번역서가 조금 지랄같다고 한다 일단 책의 내용은 일반인들을 대상으로 한 경제학 책이라서 무지 쉽다 그냥 어지간하면 영어로 읽어도 다 소화할 수 있을듯 싶은데... Audiobook의 목소리는 Robert Ian MacKenzie였는데 차분한게 꽤 괜찮았다 CD 9장 짜리라 조금 긴게 흠이였지만....

2주간 열심히 들고 다니면서 고생이 많았던 책..
물에 젖기도 하고 비도 맞고 떨어뜨려 기름도 묻어버린 책...

뭐 내용이야 아주 쉬우니까 별로 쓸 것도 없고 책 읽다보면

“Yes! There are elections. President Biya is always reelected with a 90-percent majority.”
“Do 90 percent of people vote for President Biya?”
“No, they do not. He is very unpopular. But still there is a 90-percent majority.”

이런 내용이 나온다...
꼭 우리 나라를 보는 듯한 기분이 들었다
그렇게 욕 하면서도 선거때는 꼭 한나라당을 찍는 모습.....
뭐 이번 보궐선거는 한나라당이 참패했다지만 이렇게 정국이 복합한 때에 솔직히 한나라당이 몇자리라도 차지했다는 사실에 오히려 놀라울 따름이였다

그리고 이 책을 쭉 읽다보면 그래도 우리라는 꽤 그럭저럭 잘 사는 나라로 묘사가 되는데

이건 뭐야.... 우리나라 비료를 그렇게 많이 썼던 거야?


Intensive farming is an unusually clear-cut case. Not all environmental problems will be automatically solved by free trade.
One example is the tendency to monoculture: growing only rice, only coffee, or only wheat. This lack of biodiversity renders crops more vulnerable to pests and to fluctuations in the weather.
That might seem like an argument against free trade, since increased trade encourages countries to specialize in single crops for which they have a competitive advantage. But trade barriers are a terrible way to deal with the problem of intensive farming.
First, local biodiversity and global biodiversity are both important, but national biodiversity is irrelevant: environmental problems do not notice political boundaries. To the extent that lack of biodiversity is a problem, the solution is direct environmental regulation: the keyhole economics of chapter 5. Hoping that a trade barrier will fix the problem is ludicrous.

다음 책은 지금 Barack Obama의 The Audacity of Hope을 읽고 있다
힐러리가 경선에서 물러선 지금 다음 대통령으로 그래도 가능성이 높은건 Obama인데 한번쯤 그에 대해서 알아볼 필요가 있지 않겠는가.. ㅎㅎ
그리고 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory는 한 30분만 더 읽으면 되는데 귀찮아서 잠시 멈추고 있는 중..

단... 꼴랑 92메가짜리를 거의12시간에 걸쳐서 다운 받았다...

평균 속도를 계산해보면 2kb/s...
완전 안습인 속도다.. ㅠㅠ

그래도 다운 받은게 어딘가
시더 꼴랑 두명으로 간신하 다운.. ㅎㅎ

재생시간은 3시간 조금 넘어간다

하루 평균 1시간에서 1시간 반 정도 책 읽으니까 2-3일이면 읽겠군..

지금 Undercover Economist 읽고 있는데 내용은 그닥 어렵지 않는데
재생시간이 조금 기니까 이것부터 읽을까나.. --+

뭐 어차피 크게 다르진 않는데 문제는 오디오북이 Abridged이다
Audacity of Hope처럼 왕창 넘어가지는 않기는 한데
그래도 조금 거슬린다

영어가 초딩이나 중딩용 영어라서 그냥 읽는데 지장이 없기는 한데..

미국식 영어로 다시 새로 받아야하나..

모두 다 경제학 서적이지만 뭐 그다지 어렵지 않게 보이니 그제 도착한 3권 다 읽으면 대충 몇권씩 묶어서 질러야겠다.

어제 드디어 Memoirs of a Geisha를 다 읽었다 뭐 2주간에 걸쳐서 읽긴 했지만 버스나 지하철 안에서만 읽고 또 책이 생각보다 두껍다는 것을 감안하면 그리 오래 걸리진 않았다. Bernadette Dunne의 목소리도 괜찮았고... 근데 이 책은 광고에 속았다는 생각이 든다 일단 책 전면에 써 있는 글을 보면 "Astonishing... breathtaking.... You are seduced completely."   - The Washinton POst Book World 뭐가 놀랍다는건가.. 뭐가 매혹적이란 말인가.. --+ 가정을 가진 남자가 자기 딸만한 어린 아이에게 어떠한 감정을 품었다는게 아름다운 이야기라 생각이 되는가? 그건 단지 로리타 아닌가?

또 어린 게이샤의 처녀성을 사기 위해 달려드는 남정네들의 모습이 과연 정상적인 모습이라 생각되어 그려진걸까?
또 그걸 비싸게 팔기 위해 노력하고 비싸게 팔린것을 자랑스럽게 생각하는 게이샤들의 사고가 과연 정상적인걸까?
비정상적인 사람들의 비정상적인 사랑이 뭐가 아름답다고 하는건지... --+

Memoirs of a Geisha (Unabridged, Read by Bernadette Dunne, 18h)

Plot summary

In the 1930s Japan's nine-year-old Chiyo lives in the small fishing village of Yoroido on the coast of the Sea of Japan with her mother who is sick from bone cancer and her elderly father. It is during the Great Depression and he can barely afford to take care of Chiyo's mother. Chiyo soon meets an incredibly wealthy man who wants to give her a different life. Her father gives Chiyo and her sister, Satsu, to the wealthy man, named Mr. Tanaka, who takes them to Kyoto, where they are separated. Chiyo is sold to the Nitta okiya, a geisha house in the geisha district of Gion. Chiyo meets Mrs. Nitta, or "Mother", and Granny, the mistresses of the okiya. She befriends the okiya's other trainee, a girl she nicknames Pumpkin (おカボ), on account of how when she focuses her tongue points out of the side of her mouth, and with her round face it looks like a stem emerging from a pumpkin. Everyone later calls her Pumpkin as well, even her customers after she becomes a geisha and has her name changed officially.

With her unusual blue-gray eyes (which she got from her mother), Chiyo is to train to become a geisha, but is constantly antagonized by Hatsumomo (初桃), the resident (and only profitable) geisha of the Nitta okiya. The arrogant and selfish Hatsumomo recognizes Chiyo's potential and is upset at any hint of competition, with reason—another profitable geisha would give Mrs. Nitta the leeway to throw Hatsumomo out. Hatsumomo, therefore, does whatever she can to ensure that Chiyo does not get to train as a geisha. When Hatsumomo is drunk with her friend Korin, they force Chiyo to ruin an expensive kimono that had been stolen from Mameha (豆葉), a rival geisha who happens to be the most successful in Gion and is despised by Hatsumomo. Hatsumomo tells Chiyo to "practice [her] calligraphy" and hand the ruined kimono to Mameha's maid, not to be confused with Tatsumi who is her maid later in the story. Afterwards, she tells Chiyo the brothel where Satsu is at as a reward for ruining Mameha's kimono. Chiyo later finds Satsu, who persuades Chiyo to run away with her. Unfortunately upon return she comes upon Hatsumomo and her boyfriend. Angered that she was spying, Hatsumomo pretends to help Chiyo by tucking some money away in her sash, but then grabs her by the hair and drags her upstairs, claiming that Chiyo had stolen her emerald brooch. Mother sees through Hatsumomo's lie and finds out about the boyfriend, forbidding her to ever see him again. She happily charges Chiyo the cost of the brooch regardless. Mother locks down the okiya, preventing Chiyo from escaping. She comes up with the idea of escaping over the roof, but falls off and ends up breaking her arm. After being treated, Mother refuses to invest any more money and Chiyo dooms herself to be a maid forever. Her substantial debts and the dishonor the okiya suffers effectively stops her training. Later, Chiyo is informed by a letter from Mr. Tanaka that Satsu was able to run away. She ended up eloping with her boyfriend from Yoroido, and that they have not been heard from since. He also informs her that both of her parents are dead. Chiyo sinks lower and lower into depression, but eventually the realization that she has nothing left from her past changes her mind, and she is determined to look towards the future.

On the bridge one day pondering when a sign will come to her that tells her her destiny, an encounter with the wealthy and benevolent Chairman changes Chiyo's luck. After some kind words, he then gives her money to buy shaved ice. With the money left over, she offers it in prayer, seeing that becoming a geisha was not the point, it was to be one as a stepping stone to the Chairman. Years after, she apparently attracts the eye of Mameha—the very geisha whose kimono Hatsumomo had forced Chiyo to destroy. Chiyo assumes that Memeha's interest is purely as revenge on Hatsumomo. Mameha explains to Chiyo that, despite Hatsumomo's beauty and talent, she has never had real success. For a geisha, real success means a wealthy danna, or patron. (A danna was typically a wealthy man, sometimes married, who had the means to support the very large expenses related to a geisha's traditional training and other costs. In Memoirs, geisha are depicted as permitted to engage in intimate relationships with their danna.) Hatsumomo had angered the mistress of her tea house, and therefore would never have a patron. Mameha takes Chiyo in as her younger sister and protégé and trains Chiyo to rival Pumpkin, since Hatsumomo is Pumpkin's older sister. Hatsumomo forbids Pumpkin from speaking to Chiyo, forcefully ending their friendship. Pumpkin makes her debut as an apprentice geisha and her name is changed to Hatsumiyo, but the name Pumpkin remains throughout the story.

Chiyo's entrance into apprenticeship is marked by being given a new name: Sayuri. Mameha and Sayuri remain close, even though their relationship is tested when Mameha's danna, the Baron, after cornering Sayuri in his home, forcefully undresses her and "observes her". However, he does nothing physically and after looking at her, he helps her back into her kimono. Mr. Itchoda says this is fine, for this was not a threat to Sayuri's virginity, despite the fact that the Baron is already Mameha's danna.

Mameha orchestrates a bidding war between rich patrons for Sayuri's mizuage (interpreted in the narrative, erroneously, as a deflowering ceremony), and Sayuri's final price is more than enough to pay off her entire debt to the Nitta okiya. Mameha did this purposely so that Sayuri's mizuage would be before Pumpkin's, and that she would gain favor with Mother. Mother was planning on adopting Pumpkin. This propels her into a career as a successful geisha and earning her adoption by the mistress of the okiya, who changed her name to Nitta Sayuri. This causes even more of a rift between Sayuri and Pumpkin.

Over the years, Sayuri becomes an increasingly successful geisha, cultivating many businessmen and officials as clients. Meanwhile, Hatsumomo's reputation and status as a geisha begin to decline. Mameha and Sayuri plot to drive Hatsumomo to her breaking point, and Hatsumomo is thrown out of the okiya after attacking one of her customers, a famous Kabuki actor, in a drunken rage. She attacked him because at a party, he kissed Mameha as an example of the difference between how he and an actor in England acted on stage. Since Hatsumomo was close to him, she became furious, even though it was widely known that he was homosexual. No one ever heard from Hatsumomo again. It was rumored that she became a prostitute in the Miyagawa-cho district and later drank herself to death.

During Sayuri's encounters with the Chairman, she finds it impossible to get close to him as she desires. Instead, she finds herself constantly being pushed to be with Nobu, the Chairman's dear friend and partner. Although danna-geisha relationships are not depicted as permanent, some last for many years. Sayuri knows that men in Gion do not become the patrons of geisha who had been with their friends or coworkers: being with the otherwise likable Nobu would bar Sayuri from the Chairman, permanently.

The outbreak of World War II, a theme foreshadowed by growing reference to the Japanese military, represents structurally, another major challenge for the heroine. When the geisha districts are closed, many of the women are sent to work in the factories, a fate they are shown to fear terribly because of the frightening coughs and stained skins of the factory women. Nobu, however, finds a safer place to send Sayuri. Even so, her successes are quickly made irrelevant, and her physical beauty is tarnished by manual labor and malnutrition. However, these times also make Sayuri reflect on her life. She realizes that she could have managed even if she had stayed in her childhood village.

When Gion is ready to reopen, Nobu comes to see Sayuri, asking her for a favor. She must help entertain a minister in the new government to give Nobu and the Chairman help in recovering their business, which was damaged during the bombing of Osaka. Nobu's words make it clear that he expects to become Sayuri's danna as soon as he is again wealthy enough to do so. Although Sayuri is grateful to Nobu and otherwise fond of him, she secretly loves the Chairman.

It is not until she puts herself in an undesirable position that Sayuri's desire to be with the Chairman truly frees her to pursue her own destiny. Whilst talking with Nobu, Sayuri decides that the only way to anger Nobu in such a way that he would leave her is to sleep with another man. She decides to sleep with the minister on an island trip Nobu invited her on. She asks Pumpkin (also invited) to bring Nobu to a certain place at 9:00 where they would find Sayuri sleeping with the minister. The plan works except that Pumpkin brings the chairman instead of Nobu, claiming that she knew of Sayuri's love for him and planned it as revenge after Sayuri was adopted by Mother instead of herself.

Sayuri is invited to a teahouse assuming it is Nobu, finds the chairman. The Chairman then offers to be her danna and after talking with Mother, decides that Sayuri is to retire from being a geisha as well, the Chairman would become her danna. For a while, she accompanies the Chairman to a resort house he had purchased, and entertains him, with Mameha occasionally visiting and joining in. Sayuri later moves to New York and starts her own teahouse, where she lives out the remainder of her life.

그래도 이 정도 속도면 오늘 안에는 다 받을수 있다
일단 찰리초코가 어린이용 동화인지라 가장 읽기도 편한터 지금 찰리초코로 확 기울어지고 있다... *^^*

물론 책 가격이 위에 두개는 페이퍼백임에도 불구하고 가격이 14000원에 육박하는데 이것은 달랑 5000원
하나 더 구매하는데 전혀 부담이 없다.. --+

버스 안에서 그리고 지하철 안에서...
그 동안 의미없이 보냈던 시간들이였는데 이 책을 읽으면서 그 시간들이 소중하게 다가왔다
쉬운 영어로 되어 있기에 그냥 쭉 읽어나가는데 전혀 무리가 없었다
또 Jeremy Irons의 목소리로 들으면서 같이 읽어나가니 그리 시간도 오래 안 걸리고
잠깐잠깐 보는것이지만 그 순간만큼은 이 책에 확 빠져들수가 있었다

The Alchemist Character List

Santiago- Santiago is the main character in “The Alchemist”. He is a young sheperd boy who has a dream about buried treasure in Egypt. Instead of passing it off as “just a dream” Santiago decides to follow his heart and go in search of the treasure. Along the way he begins to grow up and become wise in the ways of the world.

Melchizedek, the old king- The old king comes to Santiago the day after his prophetic dream, and tells him that he has succeeded in discovering his Personal Legend. He assists Santiago in making the decision to go searching for his treasure, and although Santiago does not know it the old king is a god.

The Crystal Merchant- The Crystal Merchant hires Santiago after he is robbed in Africa. Santiago has given up on his treasure and begins to transform the crystal shop. The merchant is a kindly man who is fair to Santiago, and even though he is afraid of change he takes Santiago’s advice about the shop. The money begins pouring in, and the shopkeeper is very grateful to Santiago.

The Englishman- Santiago meets the Englishman on the caravan across the desert. The Englishman has spent many years and many fortunes in pursuit of his own Personal Legend to learn alchemy, and is not on his way to find an alchemist at an oasis in the desert. He and Santiago strike up a friendship on the way.

Fatima- Fatima is a young girl at the oasis. She is very beautiful, and as soon as Santiago sees her he loves her, and never wants to leave the oasis. She loves Santiago as well, and convinces him that he needs to go searching for his treasure, that she will wait for him to come back.

The Alchemist- The Alchemist is a wizard at the oasis who helps Santiago on the second-half of his journey across the desert. He helps teach Santiago about the Soul of the World, and also tells the boy that right before he’s about to discover his treasure he will be tested hardest. He also performs alchemy for Santiago just to show him it’s possible to turn minerals into gold.

Part 1

Santiago lives a life many would envy. As a sheperd, he roams the countryside with his flock, traveling on new roads and seeing new things. It’s the life he always wanted, and he is happy.

Sleeping under the stars one night with his flock he has a dream that a child transports him to the Egyptian Pyramids and tells him he’ll find a buried treasure there. Santiago is willing to take a chance and decides to pay a Gypsy in the next town to interpret his dream. She tells him that his dream is in the language of the world, and if he goes to the Pyramids he’ll find a great treasure there.

The boy is irritated and decides he’s not going to believe in dreams anymore. He didn’t need to waste his time on the Gypsy with a lousy interpretation. Later that day he’s in town reading and trying to forget he even had a dream when an old man begins to speak with him. Santiago tries to ignore him but the man just won’t let up. Finally the man tells him that if the boy will give him 1/10 of his sheep, he’ll tell him how to find the hidden treasure.

Of course Santiago is amazed at this, since he never mentioned his dream to the man. The man tells Santiago that he has succeeded in discovering his Personal Legend, and he must decide if he’s brave enough to follow through on it. The man tells him that discovering one’s true purpose is a person’s only real obligation in this world.

Santiago has a real decision on his hands. Does he give up his flock, his life of stability, to go searching for his treasure? It seems like a crazy thing to do, but in his heart Santiago wants to go on this adventure.

Taking the biggest risk of his life, he decides to do it. He gives 1/10 of his sheep to the man and sells the rest. The man, who is a king, tells him he must follow the omens to find his treasure. He gives Santiago two rocks, Urim and Thumim, which will help him make decisions when he’s really stuck while on his path. The king wishes him luck, and then Santiago is on his way.

When Santiago gets to Africa he’s surprised he forgot that only Arabic is spoken. The city is strange, and the boy is a bit afraid of all the new people. He’s relieved when he meets a man in a bar that speaks his language, and the man quickly promises to help him cross the Sahara. In no time the man has disappeared with all of Santiago’s money and he is left penniless. Santiago wants to cry he’s so upset, but he quickly decides to look at the situation differently. Yes, he’s left penniless, but he’s on a quest for his Personal Legend. He can do this.

As Santiago is walking around the city he happens across a crystal merchant who has a shop at the top of a large hill. Needing food, he offers to clean up the crystal glasses for the merchant so that people will want to buy them. As he’s cleaning them, the merchant sells two glasses, and perceives that as a good omen. He offers Santiago a job, and the boy tells the merchant about going to find his treasure in the desert. He says he can only work for today because he has to cross the desert the next day.

The merchant laughs, and tells him it would take years for the boy to save up enough to cross the desert because it’s thousands of kilometers away. Santiago’s world falls completely silent, and then he agrees to go to work for the man. He tells him he has to use the money to buy some sheep.

Part 2

The boy has been working in the crystal shop for a month, and he’s not very happy. He tries very hard not to think of his treasure, or the Pyramids, at all. He’s only working to save enough money to get back home and buy some sheep.

Santiago gets an idea to build a display case outside to attract more customers. The merchant is not sure he wants to change the way things are, but the boy’s presence in the shop has been a good omen thus far. As they’re talking about dreams over lunch one day, the merchant reveals to the boy that he’s had a dream since childhood to travel to the holy city of Mecca. The merchant is different from the boy, he says, because he doesn’t want to really realize his dream. It’s the thought of going to Mecca that keeps him alive, and he wants to keep it a dream. The dream helps him get through his days at the crystal shop.

The merchant is selling more crystal than ever, and he decides to take a risk with the display case.

Two months go by and Santiago feels better about his situation. Money is pouring into the shop and he estimates than in 6 more months he can go home with enough money to double the size of his flock. He has learned to speak Arabic, and deal with crystal. He could be a rich man with all his new skills and all because he met up with a thief, which led him to the merchant. He feels this is his path now, to become an even bigger sheperd than before.

One day he gets another idea, and that is to sell tea to people in crystal glasses when they climb to the top of the hill, hot and thirsty. When he broaches the idea to the merchant, again the man is afraid. Already he’s making more money than he ever has, and if they start to sell the tea the man will have to expand and change his way of life. This, he says, he is afraid to do. After some careful thought, however, the merchant decides to sell the tea in the crystal glasses. He muses that sometimes you just can’t hold back the river.

The shop begins to get more business than ever as word gets around about their new idea. Their refreshing mint tea in crystal glasses is a hit with customers, and the merchant has to hire 2 more employees to handle the business.

It has been 11 months, and Santiago decides it is time to go. He has enough money to buy 120 sheep, and as he leaves he asks the merchant to give him his blessing. Santiago tells the man that now he has enough to realize his dream to go to Mecca, just as he has enough now to buy some sheep. The man looks at him knowingly and tells him that he’s not going to go to Mecca any more than the boy is going to go home and buy some sheep.

As the boy walks through town he thinks a long time about his future, and what his true path is. He decides to risk his journey again and go looking for his treasure. He reasons that if he fails again, he can always make more money to go back home. When he finally reaches this decision he’s tremendously happy, and goes off in search of a caravan to take him across the desert.

An Englishman sits in a dirty corral, flipping through a book on chemicals and thinking about his life. He’s spent fortunes and years of his life searching for the language of the universe, and the mysterious Philosopher’s Stone. He has studied and risked everything to find the answers behind his questions. He’s now heard tell of an alchemist who may have the answers he’s looking for, and has decided to cross the desert to seek him out.

When Santiago enters the corral, the Englishman seems unfriendly so they don’t strike up a conversation at first. When the boy takes out Urim and Thummim, however, the Englishman explodes with excitement and pulls out two stones identical to the boy’s. The king had been to visit him as well. They quickly strike up a friendship and begin talking about their Personal Legends.

There are over 200 people in the caravan crossing the desert. As they make their way through the vast emptiness day by day, the boy begins to understand that realizing his Personal Legend is his only real reason for being, and it is the same with the Englishman and everyone else in the world. When you are on your true Path, the entire universe conspires to help you succeed.

The rumor of tribal wars elsewhere in the desert causes the caravan to move faster and quieter. The boy spends his days observing the people, and thinking about the desert and what it can teach him about life. The caravan travels day and night, and the silence of the desert grows deeper as time passes. Before he knows it, they’ve made it to the oasis.

The boy can’t believe how big the oasis is. He’s very disappointed, however, when the caravan leader informs them all that they must stay here until the tribal wars are over. The boy is frustrated by the delay but resolves to have patience and not be hasty. He knows if he pushes forward impulsively he’ll miss the omens leading to his treasure. When it’s time to move, it will be time to move, and that’s all there is to it.

The next day the Englishman enlists his help to find the alchemist that lives at the oasis. The boy, who speaks better Arabic than the Englishman, begins asking the villagers where the alchemist lives. No one wants to tell him, and finally he sees a young girl at the well who might help him. He hurries over to ask her, and it’s all over after that. One look into her eyes and the boy is lost. She smiles and he knows that it’s the omen he’s been looking for his entire life. There would never be anyone else after her, and as he looks at her he is amazed to realize she understands the same thing. Without speaking a word to each other, they have spoken the truest Language of the World.

The Englishman shakes him out of his reverie, and the boy finds out her name is Fatima. When he asks her about the alchemist, she points towards the south and then leaves.

The next day Santiago waits at the well for Fatima, and when she comes he tells her he loves her and wants to marry her. She has become more important to him than his treasure.

As the days pass he meets her at the well everyday and tells her all about being a sheperd, about the king, and the crystal shop, and his quest.

Fatima tells him one day that she wants him to continue on his quest to find his treasure. She wants him to wander free, and says that if she is truly part of his Personal Legend he will come back to her one day. She will wait proudly for him.

Santiago goes to find the Englishman so he can tell him all about Fatima, and he is surprised when he finds out the Englishman has built a furnace outside his tent. The alchemist told him that he must begin the process of separating the sulfur, so that is what he’s trying to do. He’s lost his fear of failure, and really believes that this time he will succeed.

As the boy wanders in the desert later that day he sees two hawks in the sky. Something about their movement intrigues him, and as he watches one of the hawks attacks the other. As soon as this happens Santiago sees a vision of an army riding into the oasis. He tries to forget about the vision after it’s gone but his heart won’t let him. He’s troubled, and goes to see the tribal chiefs.

He has to wait hours to see the chiefs. After much discussion, they tell them that they will heed his warning of an attack, but if it doesn’t happen then the boy will be killed at sunset the next day.

As he’s walking back to his tent he’s nearly attacked by a man in black on a gigantic white horse. The man demands to know how he read the flight of the hawks. Santiago tells him that the same hand that wrote the armies also wrote the birds, and that he was simply seeing what Allah wanted him to know. Santiago is calm, even though he knows that the man might kill him. He bows his head, waiting for the blow to fall. He realizes that if he has to die tonight, he can die happy knowing he risked everything to follow his dream, and that he got to love the desert and Fatima.

Suddenly the man withdraws his sword, and tells him that he had to test the boy’s courage. The man says that if the boy is still alive after sunset to come see him. As he rides away, the boy realizes that he just met the alchemist.

The next morning every man at the oasis is armed for battle. Before noon an army of 500 had tried to attack the oasis, and all but one were killed by the men. The chief of the oasis is very happy that so many lives were saved, and he asks the boy to become the counselor of the oasis.

That night Santiago heads to the desert for his meeting with the alchemist. As they talk in his tent, the alchemist says that he’s there to help the boy find his Personal Legend. The alchemist tells him that he must continue his search for the Pyramids, and instructs him to sell his camel and buy a horse.

The next night the alchemist presents a challenge to the boy. He tells him to go find life in the desert, because only those who can find life in the emptiness can find treasure. The boy doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know how to find life, and the alchemist finally gives him a hint, telling him that life attracts life. The boy understands and lets the reins loose, allowing his horse to run freely through the desert. His horse leads him directly to a cobra snake.

The alchemist tells Santiago that this was the omen he needed and that he will lead him across the desert. Santiago’s heart is heavy because he does not want to leave Fatima. The alchemist tells him that she is a woman of the desert and understands that if she wants him to come back, she has to let him leave. The boy decides to go with the alchemist in search of his treasure, and his heart is at peace to finally be on the way again.

That night Santiago goes to find Fatima. He tells her that he loves her and is going to search for his treasure. She understands, and says that she will wait for him to return. The oasis is now an empty place for her, and she’ll look out to the desert for him everyday.

They ride deep into the desert’s silence for a week, speaking very little. Santiago finally tells the alchemist that he has told him nothing along the way, and the alchemist tells him that the only way to learn is through action. He tells Santiago that in order to understand the world he must listen to his heart, always. The heart came from the Soul of the World, and speaks the truth.

They continue on for two more days, being cautious because of the tribal wars. As they ride the boy tries to listen to his heart and learn its ways. He realizes that his heart is afraid of failing and wants to go back to the woman he loves. They ride for many more days and Santiago begins to learn the ways of his heart, its dodges and tricks and moods. He finally realizes one day that he is completely happy, and that the longing and fear has disappeared. He learns from the alchemist that every second of his search for his Personal Legend is a second spent in the company of God and eternity. The alchemist then teaches him the most important lesson of all: that the Soul of the World will test everything right before it’s time for Santiago to realize his dream. It doesn’t do this because it’s evil, only so that all the lessons that were learned along the way can be mastered. He warns the boy that it’s at this point that most people give up, when they’re so close. The proverb “the darkest hour of night comes just before dawn” rings true for the boy, and he resolves not to give up when he’s tested.

That evening Santiago’s heart warns him that they are in danger and suddenly over one hundred horsemen surround them. They’re taken to a nearby military camp, where the alchemist informs the tribe leader that he is merely a guide for his friend, who is an alchemist. The alchemist says that the boy could destroy the camp by simply turning himself into the wind. The chief laughs, and grants them 3 days to perform this feat. If they cannot do it, their lives are forfeit.

Santiago is terrified. He has no idea how to turn himself into the wind, and quickly starts to panic. The alchemist gently tells him not to be afraid, that his heart has the answers he needs to do this.

The first day the boy wanders around camp, and comes no closer to figuring out how to turn himself into the wind. That night as he’s talking to the alchemist, he asks him why he is even bothering to feed his falcon when they might die. The alchemist smiles, and tells him “You might die. I already know how to turn myself into the wind.”

The second day the boy climbs to the top of a cliff, and listens to his heart. He does not learn how to turn himself into the wind.

On the third day, the chief and his men all gather on the cliff to watch the boy. He warns the crowd that it may take awhile, and they all say they are in no hurry. They sit down and wait. And then the desert begins to speak to Santiago.

He tells the desert that it’s holding the woman he loves, and the desert wants to know what love is. As the boy explains it, the desert says it can lend its sand to help the wind blow, but if he wants to know how to turn himself into the wind he must ask the wind itself. A breeze begins to kick up, and the alchemist smiles to himself.

The wind already knows of the boy’s conversation because the wind knows everything. It asks the boy how he knows the language of the world, and Santiago says he learned it from his heart. The wind tells him that he can’t turn himself into the wind no matter how much he wants to, because a boy and the wind are two very different things.

Santiago tells the wind that they were both written by the same hand, and that they’re really not that different. If the wind will only transform him for a little bit, they could have a wonderful conversation about all of this.

The wind’s curiosity is aroused, which has never really happened before. It begins to blow, but then quickly acknowledges that it doesn’t know how to transform the boy. The wind tells him that maybe he should ask heaven, and so Santiago asks the wind to blot out the sun so he can look towards heaven without blinding himself. The wind howls, kicking up sand so the boy can look upwards to ask his question.

The boy turns his head upwards, and asks the sun if it knows about love and the Soul of the World. The sun says it does, because it loves the earth and everything on it. As they talk, the boy tells the sun that when things strive to become better then everything around them becomes better too. He realizes that the sun doesn’t really know about love, or how to turn him into the wind, and he asks the sun who he can talk to so his question can be answered. The sun tells him that he needs to speak to the hand that wrote it all. The wind, who is enjoying the conversation, screams in delight and blows even harder. On the ground, the men are trying not to be blown away.

The boy turns to the hand that wrote it all and falls silent. In his heart he begins to pray without words. He begins to understand that the wind and the sun and the desert are all also trying to find their way and understand the signs that are written by the one hand. He begins to realize that his soul is the Soul of the World, which is the Soul of God. He sees that his soul is one and the same as God’s soul, and that he can perform miracles.

When the wind ceases to blow, the boy is standing next to the chief, who realizes he just witnessed a miracle. The next day, he allows the boy and the alchemist to go free.

The next day they stop at a monastery. The alchemist tells Santiago that he is only 3 hours from the Pyramids and that he will be going the rest of the way alone. Before they part, however, the alchemist shows the boy that lead can indeed be turned into gold.

Hours later Santiago climbs a dune and beholds the Egyptian Pyramids. He weeps with happiness because he finally achieved his Personal Legend and saw it through to the end. As he looks down to where his tears hit the sand he sees a Scarab beetle, which in Egypt is a sign of God. He begins to dig deep into the sand, and is convinced this is where his treasure lies.

He digs all day, but suddenly is surrounded by a group of men who steal his money and then beat him severely. They force him to keep digging, and then when there’s no gold to be found in the ground they leave him. Before they go the leader tells Santiago that he’s not going to die, even though he feels like he might. He tells him that he shouldn’t be so stupid to follow his dreams, however. The thief says that 2 years ago right at this very spot he had a dream of his own, that he should travel to a ruined church in Spain where sheperds slept and dig deep at the roots of a big sycamore tree to find a treasure. The thief says that he didn’t do it because he’s not stupid enough to cross an entire desert over a recurrent dream.

After that, Santiago stands up and begins to laugh, because now he knows where his treasure is.

Epilogue

Santiago reaches the church just as night is falling. As he begins to dig, he remembers everything that led him to this very moment. Hours later, he has before him a chest of gold Spanish coins and precious gemstones. He remembers he has to get to Tarifa so he can give 1/10 of his treasure to the old gypsy woman.

Suddenly the wind begins to blow from Africa and brings him the scent of a perfume he knows well, and the touch of a kiss.

He knows it is Fatima and he tells her he is coming.

게이샤의 추억... 영화.. 물론 안 봤다.. --+
그냥 재미있을 듯 싶어서 고른 책인데 조금 두껍다
다행히 이것도 Audiobook을 구했기에 같이 눈으로 책 읽으면서 귀로 들으면 될듯...
But.. 책이 두꺼운 만큼 Audiobook 시간도 무지무지 길고 또.. 음질도 조금은 떨어진다.. ㅠㅠ
